A plaque was established in 1997 to designate a National Championship team. The winner is determine by a point system based on the number of contestants that can qualify from each state. The point system used was changed in 2010 when each state qualified three contestants in each of the ten classes. First place in the class gets three points, second place gets two points, and third place gets one point. Over the years there have been a few ties for the National Title.

Missouri's teams have won the National title four times, 2002, 2004, 2005, and 2009. They were co champs in 1994 and 1995 with the state of Illinois.
